Before Your IPL Treatment
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds for 2–4 weeks prior to treatment
  • Do not use self-tanners or spray tans for at least 2 weeks before your appointment
  • If you have a recent tan (sun or spray), notify your provider — treatment may need to be rescheduled
  • Discontinue retinoids/retinol, exfoliating acids (AHA/BHA), and any irritating topicals 3–5 days before
  • Avoid waxing, electrolysis, or chemical peels in the treatment area for 2 weeks prior
  • Notify your provider of any photosensitizing medications (e.g., certain antibiotics, isotretinoin/Accutane, St. John’s Wort) or recent use
  • Disclose any history of cold sores, keloid scarring, or skin conditions in the treatment area
  • Arrive with the treatment area clean, makeup-free, and free of lotions, deodorant, or perfume
  • Shave the treatment area the night before or morning of, if applicable
  • Inform your provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
After Your IPL Treatment
  • Expect redness, warmth, and mild swelling in the treated area for a few hours to a few days — this is normal
  • Pigmented spots may darken temporarily and flake off naturally over 1–2 weeks; do not pick or scratch
  • Apply cool compresses as needed to soothe the skin in the first 24 hours
  • Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to support healing
  • Avoid sun exposure and apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily for at least 2–4 weeks post-treatment
  • Skip makeup for 24 hours if possible; if needed sooner, use clean, mineral-based products
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and strenuous exercise/excessive sweating for 24–48 hours
  • Do not use retinoids, exfoliating acids, or other active skincare for 5–7 days, or until any flaking resolves
  • Avoid picking, scrubbing, or exfoliating treated areas
  • No swimming pools or hot tubs (chlorine can irritate treated skin) for 48 hours
  • Contact the office if you experience blistering, prolonged redness, signs of infection, or unusual pain
